Our Mission & Vision
Mission: Honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001 by creating a space for remembrance and an educational center that serves as a place of learning for all ages.
Vision: The Bedford 9/11 Memorial and Learning Center will stand as a beacon of hope and unity, ensuring that the legacy of September 11 endures. Through cultural, historical and educational offerings, we seek to help visitors understand the events of that day and the resilience of our nation.
Symbolism of the Memorial
Our memorial design incorporates powerful themes and symbols to honor the victims and educate visitors:
- Remembrance: Inscribed "Let's roll" by United Airlines Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer and the names of the victims from the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing keep their memories alive, highlighting 42 (+) michiganders.
- Resilience & Strength: The Survivor Tree donated by Ron Vega, New York City Department of Design and Construction Quadrant Leader and past Director of Design & Construction at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. This resilient plantings symbolize endurance and growth.
- Loss & Absence: A reflecting pond and waterfall address the void left by the tragedy and invite contemplation. A K9 German Shepherd Dog Statue stands over this area.
- Hope & Unity: Illuminated beams and thoughtfully placed lights represent hope and the coming together of communities.
- Artifacts & Education: Future exhibits will feature artifacts and interactive learning resources to deepen understanding.
